Synopsis

This book provides an exploratory investigation into the world of atypical sexual variations and interactions, in particular, the intersections of homosexuality and ethnicity, sexual addiction and codependency, sex work and cabaret patronage, and Cybersex addiction. It deals primarily with the intrapersonal, interpersonal, historical, social, and cultural manifestations of such atypical interactions and their social construction as atypical behaviors.

This book is primarily intended for graduate, and upper level undergraduate, students in psychology, sociology, family studies, and social sciences. Upon reading the book, readers will come to an understanding of how homosexuality, codependency, sex work, and Cybersex (Internet pornography) come to affect our emotional, psychological, sexual, and relational well being.

This book is unique in the sense that it provides constextually rich information into such neglected and taboo topics by utilizing unique ethnographic and autoethnographic methodological means.

About the Author

Andreas G. Philaretou, Ph.D., PMCMFT, CFLE, author and lecturer, is currently an associate professor of Psychology in the School of Humanities & Social Sciences at Cyprus College. His research and teaching interests revolve around topics of general social psychological significance, with specific focus on gender and sexuality, atypical sexual variations, male psychosexual well being, sexualized work environments, and international sex trafficking networks all examined within the historical, social, and cultural perspectives. His book: The Perils of Masculinity: An Analysis of Male Sexual Anxiety, Sexual Addiction, and Relational Abuse, was published in 2004 by University Press of America. His research also appears in various journals and presented at several professional conferences.

Constantinos N Phellas, Ph.D., is associate professor of Sociology in the School of Humanities, Social Science & Law at Intercollege, Nicosia, Cyprus. His research interests include sexualities, HIV/AIDS, gender and ethnicity, health promotion and evaluation. His publications focus on the intersection of gender and ethnicity and on the use of qualitative and quantitative methods in researching sexualities. His book The Construction of Sexual and Cultural Identities: Greek Cypriot Men Resident in England was published in 2002 by Ashgate Publishers.

Stavros S. Karayanni, Ph.D., is currently an assistant professor of English Literature and Cultural Theory in the Department of English in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Cyprus College. He has published various works on culture, politics, gender, and sexuality in the Middle East. His 2004 book Dancing Fear and Desire: Race, Sexuality and Imperial Politics in Middle Eastern Dance reveals the intricate ways in which the present tradition of this controversial dance has been shaped by Eurocentric models that define and control identity performance.
