About the Author

Professor David Warren Saxe is Director of the Center for the Study of Free Institutions and Civic Education at The Pennsylvania State University. He is a national expert on history standards and also serves as the Project Director of the American History Project. Dr. Saxe has published widely on the history of American history teaching. He addressed the lack of American history on a panel hosted by Lynne Cheney at the American Enterprise Institute, shared the podium with U.S. former Assistant Secretary of Education, Eugene Hickok and former Reagan Attorney General Edwin Meese at the Heritage Foundation and addressed U.S. Senate staffers for the James Madison Foundation. Professor Saxe has appeared on Fox's The O'Reilly Factor, PBS' Frontline and ABC's Sam Donaldson Show as well as being sought out to discuss the state of American history for the New York Times, Washington Times among other major newspapers. Dr. Saxe worked for both the Clinton and Bush administrations respectively on the new immigration-citizenship test. As a Member of the Pennsylvania State Board of Education, Professor Saxe was instrumental in the preparation of the Pennsylvania State education standards. Dr. Saxe received his American history preparation at Illinois State University (BS) and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (AM), and completed his history/citizenship education training at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (PhD).
